Pregnancy Q&A

Should I do anything to prepare before pregnancy?

If you know you want to get pregnant, making some changes now can help ready your body for a healthy pregnancy. To improve your health before conception:

  • Stop drinking and smoking
  • Take folic acid
  • Make sure you have any health conditions like diabetes or asthma under control
  • Look over any medication you’re taking
  • Clear your home of toxic chemicals

This list probably raises some questions. How much folic acid should you take? Which everyday household items contain chemicals that are unsafe during pregnancy? Which medications could create complications as you try to get pregnant?

For answers to all of these questions and more, don’t hesitate to make a preconception appointment at Women’s Health Care Center of Houston.

How will I know when I’m pregnant?

The clearest indicator of pregnancy is a missed period, but that’s not the only symptom of a life growing in your womb. Other signs you might be pregnant include:

  • Headaches
  • Morning sickness
  • Heartburn
  • Insomnia
  • Tender, swollen breasts
  • Constipation or diarrhea
  • Hip and back pain

When you experience these symptoms, you can either take an at-home pregnancy test or come to Women’s Health Care Center of Houston to find out if you’re pregnant.

If you have trouble getting pregnant, don’t worry. The team at Women’s Health Care Center of Houston offers dedicated infertility care. They can help you identify the root cause of your infertility and explore treatment options — like intrauterine insemination (IUI) — with you.

What kind of medical care should I get during pregnancy?

When you’re pregnant, prenatal care ensures that you and your baby stay healthy. The team at Women’s Health Care Center of Houston offers regular prenatal care appointments throughout your pregnancy to ensure your baby is thriving, to answer questions you have, and to screen you for possible complications.

They also offer in-office ultrasound so you can see your baby as he or she grows. And they provide pre-delivery meetings at the hospital of your choice to help you feel comfortable with their admission process and their labor and delivery staff.
